Why I love my job

Just over two years ago I was working at a hotel in Brisbane, going through the motions, and trying to please a broad range of people with average everyday food. The business, at the time, was developing, and as such, had a lack of direction and really no grounding as far as the food was concerned. After a while I began to wonder why I was doing what I was doing, and made the decision to work somewhere that shared my passion for food. Then as I was discussing this with a chef friend of mine she said I should really talk to this café owner she knew.

At that stage I was eager to try this place, and speak with the owner about his passions and beliefs. Once I met Peter Clarke, who has owned the café for 17 years, and once I saw Sassafras, I loved the place. Then we started talking inspiration and back stories, and found we had a lot in common.

Let’s fast forward to 2014. Realising the reality of what Peter wanted for Sassafras canteen, we set about a large undertaking of remodelling the front counter, meeting with local farmers and gourmet providores to discover some truly fresh and fantastic products, build some new relationships and be pleased to deliver exactly what I love about food.

Now, I can honestly say we truly serve the freshest of salads, juiciest of IMG_0789roasts and quiches, pizza and sourdough sandwiches for lunch as well as great locally sourced produce for our seasonal breakfast menu. But don’t take my word for it, after all this little farm boy may be a little biased. Just a bit.
